A Black Bear Story. That's a wild black bear in the picture below. It's not a pet but a wild bear that came to me for help one rainy day then came to dinner regularly for a while. We met on my door step. She had been injured and had lost her mom. She was very hungry. I became her vet and provider for a short time. We went on walks, she let me doctor her wounds, she came to my bedroom window each morning at 6:00 am and to my front door at lunch and at dinner time. She played with my dogs and accompanied me in the woods on walks before finally leaving us one day as a stronger and healthier bear to live in the forest on her own. Despite knowing that she is now a grown bear and would be in danger if she started hanging around again, I wish I could find her and see her again. My son Edward who was three at the time, named her 'Baby Bear', the name of his storybook bear and they were very curious about each other. Baby Bear recognized that Edward was a baby just like her and gave him very gentle and constant attention. She was fascinated by Edward and Edward was fascinated by her. He has not yet realized what a wonderful and unusual opportunity he had to be able to make friends with a baby bear but he has not forgotten her - he just thinks that its normal to have dogs, birds, goats, geese and bears around the house. We call our home in the forest, 'Black Bear Farm' just for fun as it is just a small home, literally in the forest, and because we have bears passing by all the time. There are more bears around Killarney, supported by the unusual amount of berries and acorns in the nearby La Cloche Mountians, than in any other part of Ontario and being located half way between the mountains and the shores of Georgian Bay, it seems they all visit us at one time or another.
